Improving Employee Wellness: Tips For A Cleaner, Healthier Environment(Infographic)
Healthy, happy employees make for better business. It’s as simple as that. Of course, what’s not so simple is determining how best to go about improving the workspace. With ample employee wellness opportunities to choose from, it can be difficult deciding which programs and initiatives are best. Below, we’ll briefly go over a few tips on how to improve employee wellness by enhancing the workplace and creating a more effective company culture.
First, what is employee wellness? Essentially, employee wellness is a broad term used to describe numerous aspects of the workplace — such as programs, activities, and organizational policies — that have been intentionally implemented to support healthier behavior in the workplace. It can relate to offering educational tools to expand skillsets as well as implementing extensive cleaning practices to keep everyone from getting sick.
As a matter of fact, one study on employee wellness revealed that a hygienic, healthy, and risk-free work environment really matters, with 94% of employees saying it directly impacts their happiness. This is referred to as environmental wellness and can have strong influences on an employee’s sense of personal health and overall well-being. Enhancing environmental wellness not only relates to expanding cleaning practices, but also providing workers with clean air, adequate lighting, and ergonomic workstations as well.
Ideally, a workplace striving to become “healthy” incorporates numerous ways to enhance employee well-being simultaneously. This well-being covers multiple aspects including mental, physical, environmental, and financial. Another important element is environmental awareness. Encouraging a more sustainable and ecoconscious way of life is beneficial for us all, even on an individual level. In fact, studies on employees working in “green” environments were linked with improved scores relating to cognitive function. These researchers found that crisis response scores were 97% higher in green conditions and information usage was an astounding 172% higher.
In addition to improving sustainability and enacting ecofriendlier practices, organizations of all sizes are advised to support mental health in the workplace. The most popular route for this is to set up employee assistance programs (EAPs). Other popular benefits to boost employee well-being include investing in digital health tools and education, as well as allowing flexible work schedules. Organizations are also encouraged to offer opportunities that are designed to improve physical activity, stress management, and mindfulness to help their employees feel better and, thus, be more productive.
Providing employees opportunities such as these can lead to many benefits for the company. For instance, the American Psychological Association found 89% of employees from companies that promote well-being activities say they would recommend their workplace to others. The data also shows increased job satisfaction and reduced absenteeism when companies actively strive to improve the well-being of their most important asset — their employees.
